Diwali & Wedding Decorative Lighting Ideas for Your Home

Festivals and family functions are when homes in Hyderabad light up. Here are simple, practical ideas for Diwali, weddings and other celebrations, and what to buy for each.

Front of the house and balcony

  • Hang serial / string lights along the parapet, grills and balcony railings; multicolour for festivals, warm white for an elegant look
  • Run rope lights along the boundary wall or gate; IP65 rope lights are made for outdoor use
  • Light up the gate posts with gate and pillar lights that you can keep all year
  • Use an RGB flood light to wash the building front in colour (see flood lights)

Trees, garden and entrance

  • Wrap string lights around tree trunks and branches
  • Point spike lights up at plants and walls for a dramatic look
  • Line the path to the door with bollards or small lights so guests can see their way

Inside the home

  • Warm-white LED strip in the false-ceiling cove makes the living room glow without extra fittings
  • A chandelier or pendant over the dining or entrance makes a statement for functions
  • Filament or candle lamps add a traditional, warm look
  • Put a strip behind the puja unit, TV unit or mirror for a soft background light

Wedding and function decoration

  • Stage and backdrop: curtains of string lights with a few spot lights on the couple
  • Mandap and pandal: rope lights along the poles and serial lights across the roof
  • Tents and grounds: flood lights for general light, coloured floods for effect
  • For bulk quantities, send us the list on WhatsApp and we'll discuss it

Safety tips

  • Use outdoor-rated (IP65) lights and connectors for anything exposed to rain or dew
  • Don't join too many string lights end to end; follow the limit on the box
  • Keep plugs and joints off the floor and away from water; use an earthed extension board
  • Switch decorative lights off when no one is home
